Chung Ling Butterworth Campfire & Skill Competition

It was 2 days 1 night event, most of the skill competitions were conducted during the 1st day, which unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend due to classes ans mid-term test. Arh, what a waste! I missed the backwoodsman cooking, which 1 troop wrapped the chicken with dough as a substitute for mud! How brilliant is tat!

I couldn't miss the 2nd day event, hence I woke up as early as 5.30 am, and took the ferry to get to the mainland. From there, my friend fetched me to Chung Ling.

And the 1st competition of the day was- Kawad kaki bercorak. When they say "bercorak", they really mean it.

I must say, the way they march was way out of my imagination and what I've seen (yes, this proves that I'm a katak bawah tempurung)
Besides basic marching skills, each of them must have learn dancing, music, karate and maybe kung fu too.
They kawad bercorak have all the above element in it. And it amazed me!

The marching competition ended after 2 long hours, with 2 over loaded cameras.

Noon, it was sketch, dance and sing competition. It was close to public, the champion of each category will get the chance to perform during the campfire night.

The bakaus were easily 13-15 feet long, each with a whooping diameter of 6-8 cm, and it only costed them Rm8.50 each!

And among the plentful participants, I met a 73rd Petaling scout! We asked each other the same question:" What are you doing here??" Attend campfire lah!!! duh...

And this is the Prize for the Overall champion. This one is really, really big!!

The event of the campfire is definitely more proper than the previous campfire I attended. They had the opening speechs, fire lighting, then only campfire thingy.

I left the campfire really, really early, to catch a bus back to Jetty, which turned out an hour later. Althought my stay was short, but it a great campfire I must say. And it would be better it the MCs can perform better!

Yesterday, the Penang state Merdeka Celebration was held at Queensbay Mall, walking distance from my house.
I went for the event, cause i'm patriotic free and it is just too near my house for me not to go.

It was the first time, after almost 18 years living in Malaysia. :)

How was it? Standard I would say, play some Patriotic song, dance, performance, then marching, and "vehicle marching" displaying all the bomba trucks, ccivil defense boats etc.

Later in the evening, Yee En came to visit me.
Wait, I went to visit him in his Service apartment.
He is suppose to come to my house, but He said " I'm tired" kononnya, I think his scared to get in my car. hehe

LAter we (Yee En, Yee En's brother, Yee En's brother's fren, n me)went to queensbay mall.
We had dinner, then watched a movie

Babylon A.D. We missed the first 10minutes or so. But if you r looking for a potong movie, go watch it.

Went for another round of " study camp" yesterday.
Did we study? Of course.
The question: Is how much??

Who cares...we had steamboat yesterday night, to celebrate Mr Ah Beh's birthday, not his actual birthday though.

We had all the balls you can name:
fish ball, meat ball, sotong ball, prawn ball, sausage, cinta mee, and some vege to make up a balance diet!!

Was it delicious? Comparing to restaurant's food, not at all. But considering the condition at that time,I can say it is acceptable!! Only thing is that there is too much food, which results in wastage.. bad bad....

The drinks was the best!! 1 big kettle of orange juice+ one bottle of Calsberge.. Best you gotta try it!

yes nuggets, we had nuggets too. No we didn't 'steamboated' the nuggets, we deep fried it. the kitchen turned messy n super oily. Know I really can understand why my Mum dislike frying, and I learnt it the hard way :( One more thing, i used a induction cooker pot to deep fry the nuggets and melted the plastic handle :( worst still, that's not my pot!!! ARh.... my stubbornness

SO deep frying stuff is a PANTANG!!! unless I'm not the one cleaning :)

After the dinner, we had cake.

Next day, or today, we went to PC fair.... THE END.

Hiking

Yesterday, I went for a hike with few of my college friends.

We started from Youth Park, and just follow the trail up. Well, there are a few different route up, up it all bring you to the same distination- Penang Hill. However, we didn't hike up to Penang hill, cause that will that us 3 hours just to get up there. We just stopped at rest point 5, or just simply referred to as NO.5. which is about 30-45 minute hike up.

No. 5. You get free beverages ( kopi O/Tea/water), and if your are lucky you'll get free food too.

11th Georgetown (South) Scout Group 54th Campfire

I didn't go camping with 17th pj, but.....Yesterday evening, I visited Chung Ling High School, 11th Georgetown (South) scout group 54th Campfire.
I must say, I had high expectations on their campfire. The 11th Georgetown (South) troop had very long history, it was formed 60-70 years ago (correct me if I'm wrong), and this is the 54th time, they are organizing a campfire!!!
Their campfire is very different from the campfires back in PJ and KL.


Here are a few photos showing their pioneering structure, a big complicated gateway.
Basically the pioneering structure is made up of 2 towers and they are combined at the center with small bridges, and some fancy-fancy stuff.
The total vertical stilts for this gateway is about 20+ ( if not mistaken). This structure is quite stable ( I only climbed half way up) because they actually dug a hole for each slits.

There are a few things to note about their structure
1. they are all bamboos, not bakaus
2. The lashings are tied with rafia then enforced with rubber strips.

to stabilize each slits they basically tied every single slits with diagonal bamboos.

If you think those are quadrapods, you are wrong, they are just diagonally crossed bamboo that looked like quadrapod. I think that using a quadrapod here, will be better/stronger.

So what's the theme for this campfire? It's cowboys and red indians. I found out that the campfire theme for Penang scouts are most about cow boys, red indians, pirates, fairy tale, sometimes if Emperor Chin 秦. So your roughly get the idea about the theme here lah...

Actually, in Penang they usually have a scouts skills competition, and a campfire. And as far as I can understand, they have competition for basically every single aspect.

Like the banners below, they are banners of each troop. So you just bring what ever you need and set up our banner before campfires starts. These 2 are the few 'outstanding ones'

I found this banner particularly 'yeng' . The banner is just tied to 2 bamboos that acted as the supporting slits. At the bottom of the slits they just place a few tables to position it, and the rest of the support lies on the 6 ropes and packs. built by girl guides.Another different phenomena is that some troops come in a big group.Like this one here-

Actually, all these above are just thing b4 the campfire. the campfire haven even started...

Unlike the usual campfire in Pj, which is more formal. We start with speeches from the VIPs, fire lighting, then performance, games , refreshment more songs and games....

This campfire is more like a concert. The no. of performances is 300% more compared to PJ. The campfire started as early as 6pm ( our registration time starts at 7pm), performances were presented by both the organizer and the participating schools(mainly for Penang island and main land, some from Kerian, and Ipoh too).

For performances, there was solo singing, traditional dances, modern dances, and even a costume competition. Most important of all, they had an activities called - open dance. What's that you may ask. Open dance, the DJs just max the volume and play some hot, techno, modern song and everyone just dance. To put it in a simple form, it is basically a huge open air disco. Mind you, the open dance can just go on for hours, nothing can stop them, not even the rain!!! Well it did actually rain last night, but everyone just continued to watch the performance n dance..

Like I just said, it is like concert, so just look at the props they prepared for the concert. Outsiders may thought that Chung Ling was having an open air concert with some famous singer in there.

Ya for games, they don't really have much games, just performance, performance n performance.


They dun really a protocal to follow for the campfire, they started with performance, then speech, the fire lighting, performance n another speech by some one.


The fire was not good. Security was bad, hey I didn't pay a single cent to get into this campfire.
The 4 Emcees weren't so good. Basically, I wasn't 'in' the campfire, I dun even know what is happening most of the time.

BTW, i met few of my primary classmates there in the campfire..haha not bad right? the 'scouting world' is small.

Did I enjoy? not really, but it opened up my eyes, now I finally get to experience the Penang style campfire.

So whats different abt campfires in PJ n Penang? it is totally different. The culture, the performance, the way the campfire was ran, the way participants reacted( they are very sporting).....

How ever, there is just one particular thing that is the same for PJ and penang campfires - the cheap bread and mineral water for refreshment.

Next up! Chung LIng Butterworth campfire in 6months time.
